Le street lifting est une discipline de force maximale dans laquelle les athlètes réalisent les mouvements suivant :

  • muscle-up,
  • pull-up ou chin-up,
  • dips
  • squat

En compétition de street lifting chaque athlète dispose de trois essais par mouvement afin d’établir sa meilleure performance. Le score final dépend du meilleur essai validé pour chacun des exercices.

Cette structure compétitive introduit une dimension stratégique déterminante : la sélection des charges pour chaque tentative. Une mauvaise stratégie peut compromettre une performance pourtant réalisable, tandis qu’une gestion optimale des incréments permet de maximiser le total final.

Dans les sports de force traditionnels comme le powerlifting ou l’haltérophilie, la stratégie des tentatives a déjà fait l’objet d’analyses scientifiques approfondies. Les recherches montrent que les athlètes adoptent généralement une progression structurée : [1] [2]

  • 1er essai : charge sécurisée (~90 % du maximum)
  • 2e essai : charge compétitive (~95-97 %)
  • 3e essai : tentative maximale (~100-103 %)

Cependant, contrairement à ces disciplines bien étudiées, le street lifting ne dispose actuellement d’aucune littérature scientifique consacrée à l’analyse des stratégies compétitives.
Cette absence de données est particulièrement problématique car les mouvements du street lifting présentent plusieurs spécificités :

  • forte composante biomécanique et technique,
  • implication importante de la force relative,
  • dépendance élevée à la coordination intermusculaire,
  • variabilité importante entre sexes et catégories de poids.

Dans ce contexte, comprendre comment les athlètes d’élite gèrent leurs tentatives constitue un enjeu majeur pour l’optimisation de la performance.
L’objectif de cette étude est donc d’analyser les stratégies adoptées lors des Championnats du monde de street lifting 2025.

Plus précisément, cette recherche vise à :

  • déterminer les incréments moyens de charge entre les essais,
  • analyser l’évolution du temps d’exécution concentrique,
  • mesurer la progression du taux d’échec,
  • identifier les facteurs biomécaniques et stratégiques influençant la prise de décision.

L’objectif final est d’établir un registre de référence cinétique et stratégique permettant aux entraîneurs et aux athlètes de mieux structurer leur stratégie en compétition.

méthodes et matériels

Une analyse observationnelle rétrospective a été réalisée à partir des enregistrements officiels des Championnats du monde de street lifting 2025, organisés à Halle (Allemagne).
Les performances ont été extraites de la chaîne officielle FinalRep, qui diffuse l’intégralité des tentatives réalisées lors de la compétition.

Au total, 72 athlètes internationaux ont été analysés, répartis entre :

  • catégories masculines,
  • catégories féminines,
  • différentes catégories de poids.

Les données incluent l’ensemble des tentatives réalisées, qu’elles soient validées ou non et les mouvements analysés correspondent aux quatre exercices officiels du street lifting :

  • muscle-up lesté,
  • traction pronation ou traction supination lestée,
  • dips lesté,
  • squat.

Paramètres analysés :

Pour chaque tentative, plusieurs variables ont été enregistrées :

  • charge absolue soulevée (kg),
  • incrément de charge entre les essais,
  • temps total d’exécution concentrique (s),
  • pourcentage d’augmentation du temps entre les essais,
  • résultat de la tentative (succès ou échec).

Un échec était défini comme :

  • incapacité à compléter la répétition,
  • échec musculaire ou technique.

Ces variables permettent d’analyser la relation entre intensité, vitesse d’exécution et probabilité de réussite, un concept central dans la littérature sur le velocity-based training. [3] [4]

Analyse cinématique :

Le temps d’exécution a été mesuré via le logiciel d’analyse bidimensionnelle Kinovea, à l’aide de marqueurs numériques positionnés sur les principaux repères articulaires (coude, épaule, hanche).

Le déclenchement du chronométrage correspondait au premier déplacement mesurable du marqueur associé à l’articulation principale impliquée dans la phase concentrique, excluant toute phase préparatoire ou isométrique :

  • Muscle-up, traction, dips : initiation de la flexion huméro-ulnaire (marqueur du coude),
  • Squat : initiation de la flexion coxo-fémorale (marqueur de la hanche)

La fin du mouvement était définie par la stabilisation complète de la position finale requise pour la validation réglementaire.

Validité et traitement des données :

Les données ont été compilées afin d’identifier les incréments moyens de charge, l’évolution du temps d’exécution avec l’intensité, la progression des taux d’échec et les différences selon le sexe, le mouvement et la catégorie de poids, dans le but de caractériser les stratégies d’essais.

L’analyse des tentatives en muscle-up en compétition de street lifting met en évidence une stratégie conservatrice associée à une forte dépendance technique du mouvement.

Incréments de charge :

Les incréments diminuent systématiquement entre le 2ᵉ et le 3ᵉ essai, traduisant une approche progressive vers la charge maximale.

  • Femmes : entre le 1ᵉʳ et le 2ᵉ essai, +2,5 kg en moyenne ; entre le 2ᵉ et 3ᵉ essai, +1,25 kg.
  • Hommes : entre le 1ᵉʳ et le 2ᵉ essai, +3,75 kg ; entre le 2ᵉ et 3ᵉ essai, +2,5 kg.

Cette décroissance des incréments est cohérente avec les modèles universels de tentatives maximales observés en powerlifting et haltérophilie, où l’athlète sécurise d’abord une charge réussie puis ajuste les essais suivants en fonction de son ressenti et du contexte compétitif.

Vitesse d’exécution :

  • Femmes : le temps moyen entre le 1ᵉʳ et le 3ᵉ essai passe de 2,596 s à 3,675 s, soit une augmentation de +41,55 %.
  • Hommes : le temps moyen entre le 1ᵉʳ et le 3ᵉ essai passe de 1,675 s à 2,084 s, soit une augmentation de +24,39 %.

Ces différences s’expliquent par la variation de l’exécution : les femmes utilisent le muscle-up aux anneaux, moins dépendant de la vitesse, tandis que les hommes utilisent la barre fixe, nécessitant un timing plus rapide pour franchir la transition bras-traction.

Taux d’échec :

  • Total : 13/72 (18 %)
  • Hommes : 11/48 (23 %)
  • Femmes : 2/24 (8 %)

Le faible taux d’échec suggère que les athlètes adoptent une stratégie conservatrice, limitant l’intensité maximale à RPE ~9–9,5.
Cependant, la différence entre sexes peu de nouveau s’expliquer principalement par la modalité d’exécution.

Repère performance :

Les tentatives réussies maximales se situent majoritairement :

  • Hommes : entre 1,9 et 2,2 s
  • Femmes : entre 3,2 et 3,8 s

Un dépassement notable de ces durées est associé à un risque accru d’échec technique.

Interprétation appliquée :

  • La technique joue un rôle crucial : un échec à cause d’une mauvaise transition bras-corps ou d’un timing incorrect n’est pas purement lié à la force.
  • La vitesse d’exécution pourrait servir de proxy pour la proximité de l’échec, mais elle reste influencée par la technique et la variation de l’exercice.

La traction en street lifting constitue un mouvement où la charge maximale est davantage limitée par la force pure que par la technique.

Incréments de charge :

  • Femmes : entre le 1ᵉʳ et le 2ᵉ essai, +6,25 kg en moyenne ; entre le 2ᵉ et 3ᵉ essai, +2,5 kg.
  • Hommes : entre le 1ᵉʳ et le 2ᵉ essai, +6,25 kg ; entre le 2ᵉ et 3ᵉ essai, +3,75 kg.

L’augmentation initiale importante traduit une meilleure prédictibilité de la performance sur ce mouvement strict.

Vitesse d’exécution :

  • Femmes : le temps moyen entre le 1ᵉʳ et le 3ᵉ essai passe de 1,164 s à 2,027 s, soit une augmentation de +74,09 %.
  • Hommes : le temps moyen entre le 1ᵉʳ et le 3ᵉ essai passe de 1,081 s à 1,570 s, soit une augmentation de +45,24 %.

Taux d’échec :

  • Total : 13/72 (18 %)
  • Hommes : 7/48 (15 %)
  • Femmes : 6/24 (25 %)

Contrairement au muscle-up, la traction en compétition de street lifting révèle une plus grande variabilité individuelle.

Repère performance :

Les tentatives réussies maximales se situent majoritairement :

  • Hommes : entre 1,35 et 1,65 s
  • Femmes : entre 1,6 et 2,1 s

Une augmentation du temps supérieure à ~60 % entre le 1ᵉʳ et le dernier essai est fortement associée à la fatigue et au risque d’échec.

Interprétation appliquée :

  • Le premier essai sert souvent à « sécuriser » la charge cible, avec des taux de réussite généralement >90 %, en ligne avec les stratégies d’ouverture observées en haltérophilie.
  • Le pourcentage d’augmentation du temps d’exécution entre essais peut être un indicateur plus fiable que la seule charge absolue pour estimer la fatigue ou le risque d’échec.
  • Les femmes ont des temps d’exécution plus longs, ce qui suggère une meilleure capacité à maintenir une tension continue sur le mouvement.
  • Les hommes semblent initialement plus rapides mais présentent des incréments plus risqués lors des essais ultérieurs, ce qui correspond à un profil force-vitesse plus orienté « puissance maximale » que « endurance de tension ».

scientific analysis of competitive strategies in street Lifting

introduction

Street lifting is a relative strength discipline in which athletes perform weighted bodyweight movements. In competition, each athlete is allowed three attempts per movement in order to establish their best performance. The final score is determined by the best successful attempt in each exercise.

This competitive structure introduces a critical strategic component : the selection of loads for each attempt. A poor attempt-selection strategy may compromise a performance that would otherwise be achievable, whereas optimal management of load increments can maximize the final total.

In traditional strength sports such as powerlifting and weightlifting, attempt selection strategies have already been the subject of extensive scientific investigation. Research indicates that athletes typically follow a structured progression:

  • 1st attempt : conservative load (~90% of maximum),
  • 2nd attempt : competitive load (~95–97%),
  • 3rd attempt : maximal attempt (~100–103%)

However, unlike these well-studied disciplines, street lifting currently lacks scientific literature dedicated to the analysis of competitive strategies.

This absence of data is particularly significant because street lifting movements present several distinctive characteristics :

  • a strong biomechanical and technical component,
  • a substantial reliance on relative strength,
  • a high dependency on intermuscular coordination,
  • considerable variability between sexes and weight categories.

Within this context, understanding how elite athletes manage their attempts represents a major challenge for performance optimization.

The aim of this study is therefore to analyze the strategies adopted during the 2025 Street Lifting World Championships.

More specifically, this research seeks to :

  • determine the mean load increments between attempts,
  • analyze the evolution of concentric execution time,
  • measure the progression of failure rates,
  • identify the biomechanical and strategic factors influencing decision-making.

The ultimate objective is to establish a kinetic and strategic reference registry, enabling coaches and athletes to better structure their competition attempt strategies.

methods and materials

A retrospective observational analysis was conducted using the official recordings from the 2025 Street Lifting World Championships, held in Halle, Germany.

Performances were extracted from the official FinalRep channel, which broadcasts all attempts performed during the competition.

In total, 72 international athletes were analyzed, distributed across:

  • male categories,
  • female categories,
  • multiple weight classes.

The dataset includes all attempts performed, regardless of whether they were successful or unsuccessful.

The analyzed movements correspond to the four official street lifting exercises :

  • weighted muscle-up,
  • weighted pull-up or chin-up,
  • weighted dips,
  • squat.

Analyzed Parameters :

For each attempt, several variables were recorded :

  • absolute load lifted (kg),
  • load increment between attempts,
  • total concentric execution time (s),
  • percentage increase in execution time between attempts,
  • attempt outcome (success or failure).

A failure was defined as :

  • inability to complete the repetition,
  • loss of the required final position according to competition standards,
  • muscular or technical failure.

These variables allow the analysis of the relationship between intensity, execution velocity, and probability of success, a concept that is central in the literature on velocity-based training. [3] [4]

Kinematic Analysis :

Execution time was measured using the two-dimensional motion analysis software Kinovea, with digital markers placed on the primary joint landmarks (elbow, shoulder, hip).

Timing was initiated at the first measurable displacement of the marker associated with the primary joint involved in the concentric phase, excluding any preparatory or isometric phase :

  • Muscle-up, pull-up, dips : initiation of humeroulnar flexion (elbow marker),
  • Squat : initiation of coxofemoral flexion (hip marker)

The end of the movement was defined as the complete stabilization of the final position required for official validation of the lift.

Data Validity and Processing :

The collected data were compiled to identify :

  • mean load increments,
  • changes in execution time with increasing intensity,
  • progression of failure rates,
  • differences according to sex, movement, and weight category.

The objective was to characterize attempt-selection strategies in competitive street lifting.

muscle-up :

The analysis of muscle-up attempts highlights a conservative strategy combined with a strong technical dependency of the movement.

Load Increments :

Load increments systematically decrease between the 2nd and the 3rd attempt, reflecting a progressive approach toward maximal load.

  • Women : Between the 1st and 2nd attempt : +2.5 kg on average, between the 2nd and 3rd attempt: +1.25 kg
  • Men : Between the 1st and 2nd attempt : +3.75 kg, between the 2nd and 3rd attempt : +2.5 kg

This progressive reduction in increments is consistent with the universal models of maximal attempt selection observed in powerlifting and weightlifting, where athletes first secure a successful load and then adjust subsequent attempts according to perceived exertion and the competitive context.

Execution Velocity :

  • Women : The mean execution time between the 1st and the 3rd attempt increases from 2.596 s to 3.675 s, corresponding to an increase of +41.55%.
  • Men : The mean execution time between the 1st and the 3rd attempt increases from 1.675 s to 2.084 s, corresponding to an increase of +24.39%.

These differences can largely be explained by execution modality: women typically perform the ring muscle-up, which is less dependent on minimal execution velocity, whereas men perform the bar muscle-up, which requires faster timing to complete the pull-to-transition phase.

Failure Rate :

  • Total : 13/72 (18%)
  • Men : 11/48 (23%)
  • Women : 2/24 (8%)

The relatively low failure rate suggests that athletes generally adopt a conservative strategy, limiting maximal intensity to approximately RPE ≈ 9–9.5.

However, the observed sex difference is most likely explained by the variation in execution modality rather than purely physiological factors.

Performance Benchmark :

Successful maximal attempts are predominantly observed within the following execution time range :

  • Men : 1.9 – 2.2 seconds
  • Women : 3.2 – 3.8 seconds

Execution times exceeding these ranges are frequently associated with an increased risk of technical failure.

Applied Interpretation :

  • Technical execution plays a critical role : failure resulting from an incorrect arm–body transition or improper timing cannot be attributed solely to insufficient strength.
  • Execution velocity may therefore serve as a proxy indicator of proximity to failure, but its interpretation must account for both technical variability and exercise modality differences.

The pull-up in street lifting represents a movement in which maximal load is more strongly constrained by pure strength than by technical execution.

Load Increments :

  • Women : Between the 1st and 2nd attempt : +6.25 kg on average, between the 2nd and 3rd attempt : +2.5 kg
  • Men : Between the 1st and 2nd attempt : +6.25 kg, between the 2nd and 3rd attempt : +3.75 kg

The relatively large initial increment reflects a greater predictability of performance in this strict movement.

Execution Velocity :

  • Women : The mean execution time between the 1st and the 3rd attempt increases from 1.164 s to 2.027 s, corresponding to an increase of +74.09%.
  • Men : The mean execution time between the 1st and the 3rd attempt increases from 1.081 s to 1.570 s, corresponding to an increase of +45.24%.

Failure Rate :

  • Total : 13/72 (18%)
  • Men : 7/48 (15%)
  • Women : 6/24 (25%)

Unlike the muscle-up, the pull-up reveals greater individual variability in performance.

Performance Benchmark :

Successful maximal attempts are predominantly observed within the following execution time range :

  • Men : 1.35 – 1.65 seconds
  • Women : 1.6 – 2.1 seconds

An increase in execution time exceeding approximately 60% between the first and the final attempt is strongly associated with fatigue and an elevated risk of failure.

Applied Interpretation :

  • The first attempt is often used to secure the target load, with success rates generally exceeding 90%, consistent with opening strategies observed in weightlifting competitions.
  • The percentage increase in execution time between attempts may represent a more reliable indicator than absolute load alone for estimating fatigue or failure risk.
  • Women exhibit longer execution times, suggesting a greater capacity to maintain continuous tension throughout the movement.
  • Men appear initially faster, but tend to adopt more aggressive increments in subsequent attempts, reflecting a force–velocity profile more oriented toward maximal power than tension endurance.

  • Women: Between the 1st and 2nd attempt : +7.5 kg on average, between the 2nd and 3rd attempt : +5 kg
  • Men : Between the 1st and 2nd attempt : +10 kg, between the 2nd and 3rd attempt : +7.5 kg

These values reflect the decisive contribution of body mass and absolute strength to squat performance.

Execution Velocity :

  • Women : The mean execution time between the 1st and the 3rd attempt increases from 3.055 s to 3.983 s, corresponding to an increase of +30.39%.
  • Men : The mean execution time between the 1st and the 3rd attempt increases from 3.270 s to 4.337 s, corresponding to an increase of +32.62%.

Failure Rate :

  • Total : 27/72 (37.5%)
  • Men : 17/48 (35%)
  • Women : 10/24 (41.6%)

The squat therefore represents a compromise between competitive strategy and accumulated fatigue throughout the competition.

Performance Benchmark :

Successful maximal attempts are predominantly observed within the following execution time range :

  • Men and women: 3.6 – 4.4 seconds

Applied Interpretation :

  • The absolute increase in load across weight categories is mechanically consistent: as body mass increases, the absolute load increments that athletes can attempt also become larger.
  • Unlike pull-ups, men display slightly longer execution times than women. This likely reflects individual adjustments in lifting cadence rather than a strictly sex-dependent performance profile.

The analysis of performance in street lifting highlights several general and specific trends depending on sex, exercise, and weight category, which can be interpreted through biomechanical, physiological, and strategic considerations.

Competitive Strategy and Progressive Risk-Taking :

Failure rates by exercise reveal a structured approach to effort management :

  • Muscle-ups and pull-ups, as the first movements in the competition, exhibit relatively low failure rates (18% and 18%, respectively, across all athletes), suggesting that competitors adopt a conservative strategy to secure their opening attempts.
  • Dips and squats, performed later in the competition, show higher failure rates (47% and 37%), reflecting a deliberate increase in risk to outperform opponents or achieve a personal record.

This progressive strategy is consistent with models observed in powerlifting and weightlifting, where initial attempts are secured and subsequent loads are adjusted based on fatigue, ranking position, and momentary perception. [4]

Load–Velocity Relationship and RPE :

Data on execution velocity and estimated RPE indicate that velocity decreases proportionally as intensity increases; however, this relationship is modulated by the technical complexity of the movement :

  • For technically demanding movements (muscle-ups and pull-ups), execution velocity increases markedly across attempts, while muscular failure remains rare. This suggests that technical margin and inter- and intramuscular coordination limit the attainment of maximal RPE.
  • For more “pure” strength movements (dips and squats), the load–velocity relationship aligns more closely with the classical velocity loss model, and muscular failure occurs more frequently. This confirms that these exercises allow for a more direct assessment of proximity to failure (RPE ≈ 9.5–10).

Thus, execution velocity can serve as a relevant proxy for estimating relative intensity, but it must be interpreted differently depending on the technical nature of the movement.

Sex and Weight Category Differences :

Men generally take larger absolute load increments between attempts, resulting in a slightly higher estimated RPE on the third attempt. Heavier weight categories also display greater increments, reflecting an absolute load proportionality effect.

  • In women, execution velocity in muscle-ups and pull-ups tends to increase more markedly than in men. This may be explained by the frequent use of ring muscle-ups, which require lower minimal velocity compared to bar muscle-ups.
  • In men and in heavier squat categories, both velocity and load increments increase moderately, while failure rates remain high, illustrating a controlled risk-taking strategy aimed at maximizing absolute load.

Limitations and Future Directions :

  • Limited and heterogeneous sample : despite a total of 72 athletes, some weight categories are underrepresented, limiting generalizability.
  • Cross-sectional analysis : data were collected from a single competition; longitudinal monitoring would allow for the assessment of strategy evolution and neuromuscular adaptations.
  • Undocumented training history : prior experience and specialization may influence load management and technical execution, but were not accounted for.
  • Morphological variability : segment lengths, scapular mobility, and relative strength were not quantified, restricting biomechanical interpretation.

Conclusion :

Overall, the results indicate that performance in street lifting is multifactorial, depending on :

  • Competitive strategy and progressive risk-taking,
  • Technical complexity and neuromuscular coordination,
  • The load–velocity–RPE relationship,
  • Morphological, sex, and weight category differences,
  • Energy management and exercise order.

These findings confirm that execution velocity and the relative increase in execution time are relevant indicators, but must be interpreted within the specific context of each exercise and individual competitive strategy.

How to Use Table Data in Competition :

The utilization of the data derived from our study enables the establishment of a rational approach to attempt selection.

During the warm-up phase, measuring execution time across progressively increasing loads allows for the assessment of consistency between the athlete’s current condition, movement velocity, and the load used. If the observed execution time is significantly higher than the reference values for a given load, this may indicate residual fatigue, insufficient warm-up, or an overly ambitious opening attempt, thereby justifying a more conservative strategy. Conversely, an execution time lower than the values observed in the dataset may suggest a performance reserve, allowing for a slight increase in load increments between attempts.

From this perspective, execution time constitutes an objective decision-making tool, directly linking:

  • the load lifted,
  • relative intensity (estimated RPE),
  • proximity to neuromuscular failure,
  • probability of success of a maximal attempt.

Within this framework, the values obtained from this study represent an initial kinetic reference registry in street lifting, enabling the objectification of the relationship between execution time, relative intensity, and competitive strategy.

How to Measure Execution Velocity :

Nowadays, several tools are available to measure execution velocity in strength movements :

  • Linear position transducers or optical systems : for example, VitruveFit or similar devices that record the vertical displacement of the body or the bar.
  • High-frame-rate video applications : some applications allow video sequence analysis to estimate the time between the start and the end of a movement.
  • Smartwatches or accelerometers : less precise, but sufficient to identify general trends, particularly across multiple repetitions.

Standardized Measurement Procedure :

To ensure data comparability, execution time measurement must follow a standardized procedure :

  • 1. Stabilize the measurement device (camera or sensor) to avoid any variation in perspective.
  • 2. Identify the beginning of the concentric phase, corresponding to the first detectable joint displacement.
  • 3. Determine the validated final position, according to the regulatory criteria of the exercise (chin above the bar, full elbow extension, squat lockout, etc.).
  • 4. Measure the total duration of the concentric phase, expressed in seconds.
  • 5. Compare this value with the benchmarks from the reference table to estimate relative intensity (RPE) and guide load increments between attempts.
